Syria is situated on the east coast of the Mediterranean Sea in southwestern Asia; its area includes land in the Golan Heights that has been occupied by Israel since 1967. After Syria gained its independence in 1946, political situation of country was very unstable, owing in large measure to intense friction between the social, religious and political groups of Syria. Hafiz-ul-Assad was president of Syria, He took his country toward little development, his main aims to achieve national security and domestic constancy and recover Syrian area that was lost to Israel in1967.
